Outstanding Youth Fundraiser Award Nominees

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Maryland chapter gives an Outstanding Youth Fundraiser Award each year to recognize youth who are personally involved and actively engaged in a project that raises funds to benefit the Maryland community and/or a Maryland non-profit organization. "Criteria used to select winners includes evidence of quality of leadership and organizational abilities, original and creative thought of a fundraising project and how the funds raised benefited the Maryland non-profit organization or the Maryland community." This year, two of Calvert's students, 7th Grader, Makayla Gilliam-Price, and 10th Ager, Sophia Litrenta, have been selected as finalists for this award. Makayla made bracelets with beads from around the world. She sold them and raised over $2,000 to benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Sophia raised over $2,000 in her lemonade and bake sales to donate to the mounted police unit in Baltimore. In both cases, the girls were inspired by stories of need, assessed the situation and made a plan to help, and followed through with their vision to help.
